Grandma's Ranch House

A much beloved addition to our lodging accommodations is also our oldest. Grandma's Ranch House was built in 1914. The restoration of this lovely cottage, backed by quaking aspen trees, was completed in 2011. This distinctive two-bedroom South Dakota ranch house features a full bath with period stylings such as a claw foot slipper bathtub and vanity with vessel bowl sink. It also has a fully-equipped kitchen with modern electric stove and refrigerator, a small antique farm table, wood-burning cook stove, and an old-fashioned hand pump. Although the latter two appliances are non-functioning, they serve as a reminder of the early 1900s. Grandma's Ranch House is also unique in that it is an historic building, is situated next to Newton Fork Creek, and has its own private yard.

Original Badger Hole

The latest addition to our ranch is the historic “Original Badger Hole.” Charles “Badger” Clark (1883-1957) was South Dakota’s first poet laureate and is considered by many to be the pioneer of cowboy poetry. His poems have been recorded by such noted musicians as Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, and Bob Dylan.

We have lovingly restored his one-room cabin which is now available for nightly and weekly rental. If you have ever fantasized about turning back the clock to a simpler time or living “off the grid,” this is your opportunity. The Original Badger Hole is charmingly furnished in a western theme and features an environmentally friendly composting toilet in a period-style outhouse. The cabin is heated by a wood-burning pot-bellied stove. Old-fashioned wallmounted oil lamps provide evening light. It truly is a romantic and unique experience.
