The historical, original Reef Point Cottage was built in 1883 for Mary Cadwalader Jones, a close friend and literary agent of her sister in law, the novelist Edith Wharton. Mary's daughter, Beatrix Farrand (1872-1959), who also lived there, was the acclaimed landscape gardener who designed many of the famous estate gardens on Mount Desert Island, including Reef Point. Her most significant project was working with John D. Rockefeller Jr. on preserving and beautifying Acadia’s carriage roads. After the 1947 fire the original Reef Point Cottage was torn down and only the brick terrace at the south end of the current house (built in 1963) is original. Many of the plants from Reef Point ended up at the Asticou and Thuya Gardens. 2024 Rates May 5-June 23 $4300/week June 23-Sept 1 $8000/week Sept 1-Oct 27 $4350/week Pet fee $200 Security deposit $500
